American soldiers rolled into Baghdad's Shiite Sadr City slum in search of Iranian-linked militants and as many as 26 Iraqis were killed. Iraqi officials said the death toll was much lower. Residents, police and hospital officials said eight civilians were killed in their homes. In Muqdadiyah a suicide bomber blew himself up near a crowd of police recruits, killing at least 23 people and wounding 17. Fighting near the Sunni city of Ramadi left 23 insurgents dead.

In Scotland a four-wheel-drive Jeep rammed into the main terminal at Glasgow airport and exploded in flames; the attack came a day after two cars rigged as bombs were found in London. Police arrested two men for the attack, one of them under guard in the hospital after being engulfed in flames when the Jeep crashed into the airport. The driver was later identified as Kafeel Ahmed (28), an Indian aeronautical engineer.
