A truck bomb struck the Shiite Khillani mosque in central Baghdad, killing at least 87 people and wounding more than 200. About 10,000 US soldiers used heavily armored Stryker and Bradley fighting vehicles to battle their way into an al-Qaida sanctuary in Baqouba. The troops, under cover of attack helicopters, killed at least 22 insurgents in the offensive. A Task Force Lightning soldier was killed by an explosion near his vehicle. In all 142 people were killed or found dead in sectarian violence.
