Ilan Halimi (23), a mobile phone salesman in northeast Paris, was kidnapped. Ransom demands soon followed. He was found 3 weeks later naked, handcuffed and covered with burn marks near railroad tracks in the Essonne region south of Paris. He died en route to a hospital. On Feb 20 a judge placed six men and a woman under investigation for the alleged plot to kidnap and kill on religious, racial or ethnic motives.
