In Afghanistan militants with suicide vests, grenades and AK-47 rifles attacked Kabul's most popular luxury hotel, killing 8 people in a coordinated assault. Three hotel employees and two guards were killed during the attack along with an American citizen and a Norwegian reporter. A Filipina spa supervisor wounded in the attack died the next day.

Alvaro Colom (56) was sworn in for a four-year term as president of Guatemala, along with Vice President Rafael Espada, who gave up a decades-long medical career in Texas to return to Guatemala last year as Colom's running mate.
